An Introductory Ethic for Designers

Somewhere in the journey from designer to dad to teacher, it seemed like a good idea to identify a process through which I could introduce my kids and my students to concerns which might affect the way we do things, mostly concerned with ‘the how’ but also drawing attention to how life and a designed life interact, making things true in the small and also the large action. Not conclusive, but an opening to the opportunities that having concerns create. Pause and purpose in connected actions.

Using mostly simple words and actions to describe the introduction to having concerns, of your own actions and the actions of others in the world that you—through no fault of your own—live in. An Ethic.

This is Version C, made in 2020. The original design was made in 2008.

The amount of interest in this has inspired us to approach the work with some sense of sustainability and scale.
